According to the scriptures, the story of Chitra Poornima revolves around Indra, the kings of the gods and his guru Brihaspati. Once Indra and Guru Pragaspati got into an argument because Indra had insulted Guru Pragaspati. Being a guide and mentor, Guru Brihaspati advised Indra to go on a pilgrimage to earth to reduce his bad karmas.

சித்ரா பௌர்ணமியில் சித்ர குப்தரின் படம் வீட்டில் இருந்தால் பூஜை அறையில் வைத்து வழிபடலாம். அது இல்லாதபட்சத்தில் கையில் ஏடும், எழுத்தாணியும் இருக்கும் அவருடைய உருவத்தை அரிசி மாவு கொண்டு வரைந்து வைத்து வழிபடுங்கள். வழிபாட்டின்போது "எங்களிடைய பாவ கணக்கு குறையவும், புண்ணிய கணக்கு கூடவும் பாவத்தை நோக்கி போகாமல் இருக்க புத்தியை மாற்றவும் ஞானத்தை கொடு"என பிரார்த்தனை செய்யுங்கள்.

வீட்டில் இரவு 7 மணிக்கு பிறகு விளக்கு ஏற்ற வேண்டும். வீட்டு மாடி, வீட்டு நுழைவாயில் என சந்திர தரிசனம் முழுமையாக கிடைக்கும் இடத்தில் ஐந்து, ஒன்பது பதினொன்று ஆகிய கணக்கில் விளக்கு ஏற்றுங்கள். இந்த தீபங்களில் ஏதேனும் ஒன்று நெய் தீபமாக இருக்குமாறு உறுதி செய்து கொள்ளுங்கள். இப்படி தீபம் ஏற்றி நைவேத்தியங்களை சந்திரனுக்கும், சித்திரகுப்தருக்கும் படைத்து.. இரவில் சந்திரனை வழிபட்ட பின்னர் அனைவரும் ஒன்றாக நிலாச்சோறு போல சித்திர அன்னங்களை சாப்பிட வேண்டும்.
